    About Zilla Parishad

The Panchayati Raj system is a unique and innovative experiment in the making of modern India.
In 1958, the Balwantrai Mehta Committee recommended a three-tier Panchayati Raj system to involve rural citizens in the process of rural development. In accordance with this recommendation, the Government of Maharashtra enacted the Maharashtra Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti Act, 1961, which came into effect on May 1, 1962. This led to the establishment of a three-tier Panchayati Raj system—Zilla Parishad at the district level, Panchayat Samiti at the block level, and Gram Panchayat at the village level. Maharashtra became the ninth state in the country to adopt the Panchayati Raj system.
